The earliest WuXia movies from the 1920s featured swordswomen because male martial artists refused to act in movies at the time.

Movies about woman warriors are commonplace in Hong Kong cinema. The Chinese co-opted her for their own later. She might have been a foreign woman fighting a Chinese invasion. Some historians speculate that the earliest story of Mulan, told in oral traditions before the ballad, was not even a Chinese tale. Another version ended with her committing suicide to escape becoming the emperor's concubine. Later versions from, say, the Tang Dynasty had her fall in love with a fellow soldier.

She was enough of a blank slate for subsequent eras to impose different stories to the spaces in her story. She went to war disguised as a man in place of her elderly father, became a general who led the army to victory against the invaders, then returned home 12 years later and put on a dress again. The original ballad, believed to be from the 6 th Century, was fairly basic. She was probably an amalgamation of several real female soldiers of the era. The usage and topic of Mulan (film) is under discussion, see Talk:Mulan (1998 film) - 67.70.32.Mulan might not have been a real person. No further edits should be made to this section. The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. If WP:NATURALDAB really does provide a case for the current title (I'm skeptical) then we should fix WP:NATURALDAB rather than follow it in this case. (Film Fan moved page Mulan (2009 film) to Mulan: Rise of a Warrior) and on the rationale provided by nom it seems a no-brainer to me, frankly. I note that this is simply reversing a previous and apparently undiscussed move 20:52, 18 July 2013 Film Fan (talk | contribs | block). WP:SUBTITLE usually wouldn't apply here, but it's worth thinking about anyway. A US-centric title may be suitable for an American film, but this is a Chinese film and obviously targeted mostly to Chinese audiences. I am usually an advocate for WP:NATURAL but the current article title is too US-centric. The film's main box office came from Asia, and as can be seen from the Asian posters: China, Singapore, South Korea Thailand etc., it's all just "Mulan". As far as I can tell, the film was not even screened in the US. I do understand WP:Natural but with so many international titles, the current title just seems too US-centric. The UK uses 2 different titles, Mulan: Warrior Princess (DVD), and Mulan: Legendary Warrior. As can be seen here, only the USA uses the current title. Mulan: Rise of a Warrior → Mulan (2009 film) – IMDB lists the film under the current title, but even the DVD cover art on IMDB has a different English title.
